Matthew worked for two federal judges, served as a federal prosecutor, taught law school classes, and handled high-profile cases at Skadden Arps. A winner of the California Lawyer of the Year Award, he recently litigated a novel case involving homelessness in Los Angeles that secured $4 billion, 20,000 shelter and housing beds, and a massive increase in mental health and substance abuse treatment services.
Over the last two decades in the law, Matthew has thrived in handling challenging matters. Helping clients navigate rough waters. Finding creative ways to solve complicated legal problems. Trying hard cases. Taking on the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles. Defending Planned Parenthood affiliates and employees from False Claims Act cases and violent assaults.
Among his representations are:
Trial counsel for victims of embezzlement in FINRA arbitration against financial institution—case settled in victims’ favor after one week of trial.
Won dismissal of over $800 million in False Claims Act cases brought against Planned Parenthood.
Trial counsel for CFO of school district, secured multi-million verdict in whistleblower trial.
Counsel for director of nursing, secured dismissal of criminal charges based on prosecution’s failure to disclose exculpatory evidence.
Trial counsel for clean energy technology executive in complex trade secret arbitration.
Trial counsel for widow in legal malpractice arbitration against prominent estate planning firm.

In his spare time, Matthew swims in the ocean and plays guitar and sings—neither of them particularly effectively. His wife, however, is quite effective in her work helping students and families navigate the college admissions process (https://thecolledge.org), and his two teenage daughters occasionally tolerate him.
